Reporting Abuse or Neglect

Abuse or Neglect of an Adult over 60

Criteria:

  • Is 60 or older
  • Resides in Massachusetts and lives in the community (as opposed to long term care)

If abuse or neglect is suspected, report to: Protective Services 24 hour hotline, 1-800-922-2275

Abuse or Neglect of a Disabled Person 18-59

Criteria:

  • Between the ages of 18 and 59
  • Be disabled by means of intellectual/developmental disability, mental illness, or physical disability, and
  • Requires the assistance of a caregiver to accomplish daily living needs as a result of the disability.

If abuse or neglect is suspected, report to:

  • The Disabled Person’s Protection Commission (DPPC) 24-hr Hotline at 1-800-426-9009.
  • Deaf and Hard of Hearing callers, use Video Relay Services (VRS) or MARelay (711) to contact the DPPC hotline.
Abuse or Neglect of a Patient by a nursing facility or hospital staff

Criteria:

  • Children and Elders residing in long-term care facilities of any age

If abuse or neglect is suspected, report to:

  • All Ages: Massachusetts Department of Public Health 1-800-462-5540
  • Birth – 17: Department of Children and Families (DCF) 1-800-792-5200
  • 18-59: Disabled Persons Protection Commission (DPPC) 1-800-426-9009
  • 60+: Elder Protective Services 1-800-922-2275
